As if creating content, products, and services, and building your brand wasn’t enough! One night you sat in front of your computer, researching on better ways to market your services and behold you stumbled upon SEO and GOOGLE ranking blogs. Suddenly your stomach sank in. There’s a lot of stuff going on in those blog posts, but one thing is for sure, it seems like ranking on the first page of GOOGLE is super important. But why? And how do you get to rank #1 on your keywords? Some of us may not even know what keywords really are. I mean we probably just got the hang of Instagram hashtags, right? WHAT ARE SEARCH ENGINES?

Before we get into SEO, let’s get a little bit of clarity on what Search Engines are. The most common search engine today is called Google, but you also have Yahoo!, BING and others. Search engines help people search for the content they are currently looking for. When you type in for example “Eyelash Extensions in San Diego” and click on the SEARCH button, it triggers a complex search process on the backend that pulls the most relevant results to your search.

This is a great idea! Imagine how much information is stored on the internet and not having a way to filter the information, whether it’s relevant or not.

The million-dollar question is how do search engines, when we look at them as a database of information, categorize and filter the tons of data and content that are being created on a daily basis?

ENTER: SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of ensuring that your content is optimized for search engines, specifically when a search is triggered. This is important because if your SEO is not on point, the likelihood that your content will be featured as a relevant search result will decrease.

The best way to ensure that your content is optimized is to be aware of how Search Engines “Tag” contents. Google uses GoogleBots to crawl a web page and look for specific elements that tell them what the content is and what it is about. These GoogleBots do not know how to read nor do they see, so for example, if you have an image on a post, a GoogleBot will know it is an image by the type of file but it will not know what the image is about.

There are Five Main “Tags” that  GoogleBots recognize in a web page:

  • Keywords

  • Meta tags

  • Alt Tags

  • Page Titles

  • Headlines

Ensuring that these tags are fully optimized will give you a good chance when it comes to ranking #1 on Google.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU MANAGE TO GET ON THE FIRST PAGE OF A SEARCH

When you type your keywords: “Lash extensions in X CITY” the first couple of results are paid ads, next after that are the map results with locations who have been business verified and possible have reviews, the next results will show up social media results – finally, you will get the corporate, big money spenders.

So you are basically competing with all of these before you even get the spotlight.

But let’s entertain the idea that you managed to get into the first page of Google. . .

After they scroll past all the different types of results and somehow manage to stumble upon your link – did you know you have only 150 characters (not words) to be able to entice people to click on your link? This is particularly difficult as you have to know your Unique Selling Proposition and make sure that within the 150 characters you are also giving them an irresistible offer to click into your site, so that they can get to know you and your prices and maybe book with you.

But also, keep in mind that most likely these people searching for your services will be also shopping around for the best prices.

SHOULD YOU INVEST YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON SEO?

Let me be very honest with you: I did not use SEO to build my business. Here’s how you can figure out if SEO is worth it for you. . .

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you have the resources available to pay someone to do it for you?

  • Do you have the time and energy to learn and practice SEO?

  • Are you able to immediately track the ROI on your efforts?

  • Are there better, less expensive methods to start building your brand and get clients that are ideal for you?

SEO IS NOT HOW I BUILT A MASSIVELY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AND YOU 1,000% CAN HAVE A THRIVING LASH BUSINESS WITHOUT SEO BEING A PART OF YOUR OVERALL MARKETING PLAN.

SEO also does not offer you the ability to demonstrate YOUR EDGE. We are a visual type of business – we are in the business to make our clients look and feel beautiful, right? With SEO you are competing for pricing, not quality. There are better, stronger strategies that will get you not just clients but your IDEAL client – who knows what they want no matter the price point. And ultimately, that’s what you should strive for. Clients that know your worth.
